A manufacture and distributer of healthy farm animal food, with offices in Ireland, South Africa, Idaho and San Diego and the owner had 5 employees in San Diego working with QuickBooks and a database program called Fishbowl. Leases in San Diego were very expensive, and the owner wanted to close the office in San Diego and have the San Diego employees work from home like his Idaho employees were doing already. He was very unhappy with his current IT solution of VPN connections to his server in San Diego. QuickBooks and Fishbowl failed intermittently, and both were incredibly slow for all his employee’s affecting productivity.

BrenTech recommended moving the server into BrenTech’s network operations center and installing a terminal server to run applications locally instead of through the VPN connection. The owner was paying $4500 a month in leases and $500 a month in electrical. Moving the server to the network operations center cost the owner $499 a month saving the owner tens of thousands of dollars a year in rent and electricity.

The owner approved the terminal server and BrenTech installed the equipment in less than 2 weeks. The terminal server provided a centralized location for all external and internal employees to log into providing fast and secure operations. The owner’s favorite functions of the terminal server is/was the ability to reduce maintenance/installation/upgrade times for all users and the ability to watch user’s desktop activity covertly while they worked.

The terminal server is very fast, and all data is secured on the server with none of the data being anywhere else but on the server. The owner stated that all the employees were very happy with the speed of the database and QuickBooks.

The biggest cost savings the terminal server provided was the ability to install a new application once on the terminal server (1/2 hr.) and all 18 users immediately had access to the application whereas before the terminal server was in place each computer (18) had to have the application installed individually (9 hrs.). Upgrades were also just as fast. The amount of support agreement hours needed dropped dramatically saving the owner thousands of dollars a year on support.
